Drumahoe playpark campaign

The site for the proposed park is the strip of land within the boundary of the Former Faughan Valley School which runs parallel to Drumahoe Primary School. Lead partner is the process to develop a play facility is Derry City Council and the result of application should be known by end of March, but a letter of offer will not be issued until May.

The Association has been very active for several years trying to develop a playpark in the heart of the village. Outline plans were drawn up some time ago, in the hope that money would become available to further the land.

“When the Spaces and Places Flagship Funding was announced, this provided the perfect opportunity to pursue the project,” said DUP Councillor Hilary McClintock who has been highly supportive of the campaign.

“An initial partnership was set up between Drumahoe Community Association, Drumahoe Primary School, Western Education and Library Board and Derry City Council to look at the feasibility of applying under flagship status. An expression of interest was lodged. The partnership were delighted to find that they were in the final six out of the original 57 that could be awarded funding and were told up to four projects out of the six finalists might get money if the Stage II application was strong enough.

“With the partnership now strengthened with the addition of Tullyally Community Partnership and Waterside Neighbourhood Partnership, the massive and very detailed Stage II application is almost complete. As part of a further consultation a variety of methods are being used to reach residents of all ages,” Mrs McClintock said.

The community’s plans for a play facility is based on community canvassing and surveys. Among those from whom opinions were sought were members of the Senior Citizens Club while, at a festive evening in Drumahoe Primary School with a survey was conducted and children were asked about their favourite equipment.

Facilitators have also been working in schools and all Waterside schools and youth clubs have been asked for input. A leaflet drop involving thousand of homes.

“This is a great opportunity to fund not only the playpark and the MUGA but also to open up pathways to the pitches below. This funding would really transform a derelict space in the heart of Drumahoe,” Mrs McClintock said.
