Death of May Gage - a Lavin stalwart

Mrs May Gage (pictured right) of Knockahollet Road, , near Cloughmills, passed away on Friday following illness which she bore with dignity and courage.

Anyone who knew May Gage would have immediately associated her with Lavin flute band.

Her brothers, James and the late John Murphy as well as the extended Murphy family circle formed the backbone of both Lodge and band and May played a full part in assisting where she could.

She worked tirelessly, acting as chair of the Ladies Committee and would have been the first in the hall to help ensure that refreshments were on hand during social gatherings or at the end of parades.

May also fund-raised extensively, particularly when a new hall was under construction following an arson attack which completely destroyed the old hall.

May’s enthusiasm and dedication rubbed off on her family who also became steeped in the Lavin tradition.

One member of the Lodge told the Times: “It will be hard to go into the hall in the future and not see May in the kitchen or organising something.

“She lived for Lavin and everyone respected her for all she did down the years. May was also a person who cared a great deal for her family and she’ll be sorely missed.”

The funeral took place on Monday from her home to Ballyweaney Presbyterian Church where a service was held. Interment took place in the adjoining graveyard.

May is survived by her husband, Uel, children, Hazel, Joan, Iris, Bryan, Moyra, Helen, Margaret and Gordon and by her brother, James. She was also a grandmother and great grandmother.
