Sent to prison for stealing sandwiches

A 38-year-old man who stole sandwiches was given a prison sentence last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

Emanuel Whitla, Drumbeg, Craigavon, admitted the theft of a sandwich valued at £3.09.

The court heard that police received a report from a service station on the Avenue Road, Lurgan, of the theft of sandwiches.

The defendant was identified through CCTV.

Defence solicitor Siun Downey said her client didn’t remember the offence as he had an issue with drink and drugs.

District Judge Greg McCourt said Whitla had 84 previous convictions.

For the theft he sentenced Whitla to one month in prison and ordered him to pay a £25 offender’s levy. He also put the suspended sentence into operation to run concurrently making a total of four months in custody.

Whitla was released on bail of £500 to appeal against the sentence.
