Drink driver snapped streetlight in half

Police received a report of an accident on Old Caulfield Road on the evening of October 11th stating that a driver had left the road, breaking a streetlight in half, before landing in a field.

Officers attended and discovered Juozas Pozera, 34, from Castle Place, in the rear of the vehicle with blood coming from a head wound.

A witness said that he had heard a bang and then had spotted the car flying through the air.

He had come to the aid of the defendant, Pozera, helping him into the rear of the car.

Police noted the smell of alcohol and the defendant failed a roadside breath test.

He was taken to hospital where a sample was taken which was one and a half times the legal limit.

Pozera was later interviewed and admitted having been drinking prior to driving the car on the night in question.

Appearing before East Tyrone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday representing himself, Mr Pozera again admitted his guilt to the charge of driving with excess alcohol in blood.

District Judge John Meehan handed down a fine of £200 and a driving disqualification of eighteen months “given the consequences of the accident and the damage to road equipment”.

An offender’s levy of £15 was also imposed.
