Councillors pledge support for Lisgarel at public meeting

Speaking after the meeting, the DUP trio said: “We welcomed the opportunity to attend the meeting and listen to the views of staff, resident’s families and concerned members of the public.

“When the Board announced the decision to close all residential homes in the Northern Trust area, Health Minister Edwin Poots reversed that decision and has since stated that all residents can stay in their homes as long as they wish and no employees of residential homes will lose their jobs.

“We understand the concern over the non-admissions policy that is currently in place whilst the Board’s review is happening however we believe that the case for Lisgarel is strong and we will continue to lobby on behalf of this important facility for the area.”

The Councillors continued: “We are pleased that as part of the review the Board will be looking not just at residential care but also how homes like Lisgarel can be used as a broader hub for older peoples services.

“This is good news for Lisgarel as it well placed to be this kind of hub that can ensure its future and investment.

“We are willing to work with others to make the case for the home and we believe it is important that elected representatives cooperate.

“The future of Lisgarel is far too important to the town and the surrounding area to be used simply as a stick to beat other parties with.

“We would hope that all would reflect on this and how we can work together to deliver for those who need this service.”

Last week, trade union Unite started a new campaign after warning that care homes are still under ‘real threat.’
