Council unveils ‘giant’ plans for Valley Park play area

Works to transform the Valley Park are well under way, and plans for the new play area at the site were recently approved by council.

The £3.58 million EU-funded shared space project for the park will see a £400,000 state of the art play area installed to the rear of the Valley Leisure Centre, adjacent to the duck pond.

With local links to the author Jonathan Swift, who was inspired by the backdrop of the Cave Hill when writing his famous story about a giant, the Gulliver’s Travels theme featured heavily throughout the public consultation process for the project.

“Featuring a ‘giant’ mound and sunken ship, the play area will reflect this theme, providing children of all ages and abilities with a unique and exciting adventure. Different areas of the park will cater for the specific needs of each visitor; from the more active to those looking for a more tranquil and sensory experience,” a council spokesperson explained.

The Valley Park project will transform 2.2 acres of under-used space into a state-of-the-art 3G sports pitch, a picturesque linear park and an adventure play area, for use by all sections of the community.

The project, part-funded by the DSD, is due for completion in June 2015.
