ATO deal with ‘World War Two grenade’ in Pomeroy

A “suspicious object” that required the attention of bomb disposal experts last night in Pomeroy, has since been described as a “World War Two grenade”.

Army technical officers [ATO] were called to the scene after a device was discovered on the Cavanakeeran Road in the village.

Local councillor Cathal Mallaghan told the Mail he believed the “collectors item” had been unearthed during recent roadworks in the area.

It has since been declared to be “nothing untoward” by the PSNI.

At the time of the incident Chief Inspector Jane Humphries said: “ATO have been tasked to the report of a suspicious object.

“Part of the Termon Road has been closed between Loughmallon Road and Cabhan Aluinn. Diversions are in place. There have been no evacuations at this time.”

When the security alert was over and roads re-opened, she added: “ATO attended and the object was declared to be nothing untoward.”

A police helicopter was also involved in the operation.
