Ardboe company develops new cow tipping product

The company has invested over £35,000 in the cow tipping crush device and has been offered almost £16,000 of support by Invest NI, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Northern Engineering was formed in 2003 by Joe Quinn and his wife Kathleen, to design and manufacture wall-mounted cattle cubicles for the agricultural market. The company has since designed and developed a range of products, including the Staircaster product (pre-cast stair making equipment), which has been marketed internationally.

Commenting on the new cow tipping product, Carol Keery, Invest NI’s Director of Innovation, Research and Technology, said: “Northern Engineering has proved repeatedly that it can pinpoint gaps in the market for new products and apply its technical expertise to developing viable solutions.

“This latest product has already attracted interest from farmers and has the potential to generate significant sales both within and outside Northern Ireland.”

The tipping device has been designed to be adaptable to a number of uses including caesarean operations, de-horning, hair clipping, implanting tags, artificial insemination and other veterinary procedures. This ensures that it will appeal to a wide market.”

Joe Quinn of Northern Engineering said: “Our new cow tipping device will help farmers and vets to more quickly and safely carry out essential health checks on the animals in their care. The device will also reduce stress on the animals.

“With Invest NI’s support we have been able to move quickly to develop the product and begin marketing it, and are confident that over the next 12 months we will see sales ramp up.”
