Charity boost for South Africa trip

The group will spend 10 days coaching hockey, football and golf in disadvantaged parts of the city.

The coffee morning, organised by one of the seven, Helen Morrison, was held last Saturday in Waringstown Parochial Hall.

Surplus funds from the event will help the Amy Biehl Foundation, which organises activities designed to educate, develop and encourage Cape Town’s township children, steering them from a life of violence, crime, drugs and HIV/AIDS.

For the past seven years a team of volunteers from Lurgan have worked with The Amy Biehl Foundation, running an annual sports academy specialising in hockey and football.

The scheme’s success resulted in the acceptance of the first girl’s hockey team from the townships playing in the South African Western Province Hockey League.

The Amy Biehl Foundation was set up following the tragic death of Amy in 1993.

The American student, who attended the University of Western Cape Community Law Centre, was driving three black colleagues back to Cape Town’s Guguletu township when a group of youths pelted her car with stones and forced it to stop. She was pulled from the car and stabbed to death.

Helen thanked all those who attended the coffee morning and especially those who provided buns. The group also held a fundraising golf day in April.
