Students attend pilot
CAST conference

Students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) came together to share their skills and knowledge at a CAST Conference held at the college’s Lisburn campus recently.

CAST (Conference for Advancement of Studies in Technology) was piloted this year by SERC to enable students to share their findings and projects from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) related subjects.

A Japanese model, CAST was identified by Head of School for Manufacturing and Electronic Engineering Kieran McKenna, on one of his exchange trips to Toyama National College of Technology, who have had a partnership with SERC since 2010.

Each year Toyama hosts a CAST conference in which their advanced programme students deliver presentations in English on their research projects. Their work is evaluated by a panel of visiting academics, and Kieran was part of this in 2012 and was eager to extend it to SERC.

The panel question the students in English on the outcomes of their research.

In the last CAST students from four National Colleges of Technology participated and two students from SERC took part via video link.

John-Joe Kelly and Neville Baillie, both HND students, designed and built a desk mounted jet engine and a remote controlled vehicle respectively.
