Horticultural society meeting

THE new season of meetings at Hillsborough Horticultural Society began with a presentation by Mr Arthur Dixon, a rose grower for 23 years and judge of roses, entitled ‘A rose to suit your garden.’

Arthur began his presentation by describing the various uses of roses, from planting shrub roses in herbaceous borders to climbers and ramblers, which are often found covering walls and pergolas in cottage gardens.

He then went on to discuss planting, pruning and feeding. For those members of the society, reluctant to cut back their roses, his advice was, ‘If in doubt, cut it out!’

For the more adventurous Arthur described the processes of cultivating roses from cuttings and some members indicated they might give this a try.

The next meeting of Hillsborough Horticultural Society will be on Wednesday, November 28, in Hillsborough Village Centre at 8pm. The speakers, Maureen and David Irwin, will talk about ‘The Glorious Gardens in Holland.”

New members are very welcome.
