Kristyn Getty premiers new album, with Derry Girls connection

Answer? The director of the series is Kristyn’s brother Michael Lennox, who also directed the video for her forthcoming new album, Evensong.

Speaking to the News Letter this week, Kristyn’s husband Keith revealed that her new album, a celebration of her past decade, is to launch this Monday.

“My wife turned 40 in May and wanted to make album of the hymns and lullabies that she sang to her girls as they were growing up,” he said. “When she turned 30 she thought she couldn’t have children - and then had four girls before she was 40!”

On the album she duets with a number of country stars while her brother directs the video.

“He came over and directed a special video of her new album, Evensong. Amy Grant gave us her barn and her farm and we filmed it in the upstairs of her barn - we lit it up - and recorded the whole project by twilight and at night time. It was a cool project for Kristyn and her brother to do something together.

“Filming [for Derry Girls] is off at the moment so Michael popped over to see us in Nashville which has worked out really well.”

Guest appearances on the album include Vince Gill, Heather Headley, Ellie Holcomb, Sierra Hull, Deborah Klemme and Sandra McCracken.  

The album launches as part of the annual ‘Sing!’ Conference which opens today, online this year due to Covid-19.

It has become one of the most popular worship events in America in recent years and organisers have spent the last few months adapting the event to go online. Its stated aim is to inspire a global audience with theological and artistic excellence.

Some 20,000 people from 60 countries have signed up for this year’s event.

Organanisers say the conference is for anyone who wants to “grow in their understanding of how Gospel-centered worship will transform their life, your family, and your church”.

The four-day conference will have special seminars for pastors, parents, worship leaders, songwriters, musicians and audio/visual directors with a Children’s Leadership Forum also included.

However Michael is not the only talented member of the family involved in the ‘Sing’ conference next week. Other Northern Irish contributors include her uncle John Lennox, Professor of Mathematics at Oxford University, an internationally renowned speaker on science, philosophy and religion; her other brother Simon Lennox, director of WordGo, a bible study app, and her father Gilbert Lennox, who helped found Glenabbey Church in Newtownabbey, a teacher, writer, and artist.

Another NI contributor is Jonathan Rea, who lives in Bangor. He is director of New Irish Arts, whose choir and orchestra perform in over 25 Gospel-centred events per year. He is also a regular BBC contributor as a conductor and speaker.
