Full back Scott McLean scored 19 points as Rainey started the season with a victory in the late summer sun against Queen’s at the Dub.

The students made a fast start and took the lead with a try after three minutes, prop Anton Lupari charged through midfield, centre Ali Wright carried close to the posts before popping the ball to scrum half Josh Fullerton to dot down and Jack Milliken converted.

McLean opened Rainey’s account on 17 minutes as the students went off their feet at the ruck, Milliken restored Queen’s seven point advantage with a 24th minute penalty.

McLean added his second penalty after home flanker Saul Herdman was sin binned and the Old Boys took the half time lead with a try from new signing Johnny Burgess.

From a lineout of the top winger Jody McMurray made a break and cut inside before releasing Burgess to go under the posts and McLean’s conversion gave Rainey a 13-10 lead at the break.

McLean was on target with another penalty on 53 minutes after the students went off their feet at the ruck.

A strong run from No8 John McKenna earned Rainey another penalty which McLean slotted over via the upright.

Rainey should have had a try when from a five metre scrum they pushed Queen’s over the line but McKenna knocked on trying to ground the ball.

McLean got his side’s second try, former Ulster centre had a probing run before offloading to Burgess and his slick hands released the full back to go over in the corner b he failed with the conversion for a tight angle

Andrew a player coach with the Hatrick Park club finished off the try scoring, he fielded a poor kick out of the Queen’s defence by flanker Dave Whitten, he cut inside before chipping the cover and winning the foot race to touch down but McLean filed with the conversion.
