Registrations are already coming in from all over the world for this year’s charity run which will raise funds for vital mental health counselling services in Derry. The popular annual Jog, which usually takes places in the Bogside and Brandywell areas in memory of local man, Colm Quigley, is changing its format this year. This year is a virtual race, which is open to individuals and smaller family/friend groups, to avoid large gatherings in adherence with official guidance on Covid-19.

O’Neill's Sportswear, the headline sponsor, is supplying customised t-shirts for participants who will complete the distance within their own locations during the week leading up to World Mental Health Day on Saturday, October 10th . Ex-pats from Australia to America have already signed up for the event which also continues to attract strong local support.

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Brian Tierney, has also given his backing to the event and urged joggers of all ages and abilities to register to take part as soon as possible. He said: “The Colm Quigley 5K Jog in the Bog is a favourite for local runners and especially the Bogside and Brandywell communities. Like so many other charity events it was unable to proceed as normal this year. However, by going virtual instead supporters around the world now have an opportunity to take part and help raise both funds and awareness for mental health which is more important than ever in the current climate surrounding Covid-19.

“I would like to wish all the participants both here and across the globe well as they complete their virtual 5K in the week beginning October 5 th and also pay tribute to the organisers and sponsors for mobilising to ensure the event can still go ahead in 2020 despite the unprecedented challenges presented by the global pandemic.”

The Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum (BBHF), which organises the annual event, is delighted with the numbers registering, and there’s still time to get involved. Registration costs £10 and the money raised will be used to offer one-to-one counselling services which are expected to be even more in demand in the coming months.
