McIntosh wins final Open Week accolade at Prehen

Paul McIntosh (15) won the final competition of the City of Derry Open Week with a magnificent score of 45 points on Sunday.

In excellent course conditions, he started and finished the front nine with four pointer birdies at the par three first and par four ninth holes giving him 23 points going out and he continued his good form scoring with a further 22 points on the back nine.

Second place went to inform golfer Jim McDaid (15) with 41 points even though he blanked holes on both the front and back nines.

Third place went to Rob Jefferson (13) with 40 points helped by birdies on the third and seventh par fives.

Seamus Given had his first ever hole-in-one at the first and he insisted on buying everyone a drink afterwards.

The best gross score was won by Graham Hepburn (5) with 29 points gross.

The best visitor was Victor Brolly (17) with 38 points, and the best Lady golfer was Ann Wallace (18) with a credible 33 points in spite of her two blanks at the seventh and 12th holes.

Tickets are available at the bar from Ciara or Rowenda for The Gene Fitzpatrick Night, dancing to Felix Healy, costing £6, non members most welcome.

City of Derry’s Fred Daly Team came out on top against Ballyliffin at the weekend.

Down five matches to two at Ballyliffin, they turned it around at Prehen, winning all seven matches leaving the overall result 9-5.

Ronan Burns and Jordan Dunn won both matches home away, City of Derry now play Dunmurry GC in the next round.

While City of Derry members dominated the prizes in the Campsie Paper Company open mixed foursome taking all three prizes. Stephen McKeegan and Gerda Laird came out victors on a break of tie over all three places.

Second were Mary O’Doherty and Sean McKane and Bernadette North and Reg North were third after all three finished with 36 points.

Meanwhile the confined Foyle Club Classic attracted an excellent entry of 24 teams, the teams of four event had two scores to count at each hole with all four scores counting at a hidden hole in each nine, making for an interesting format and ensuring the winners came from the most consistent team over the 18 holes.

In first place were Kieran Bradley, Joe Bradley, John Jennings and Mark Doherty after they scored 108 points, second were Eamon O’Kane, John McDowell, Gerald Toland and Michael Coyle who finished with 104 points and David Knox Jun, Paddy Coyle, Stuart Gauld and David Knox finished with 103 points to claim third spot.

The ladies’ winners were Faye McGrotty, Margaret McCarron, Sadie O’Kane and Sheila McLaughlin who finished with 89 points.

The early starters in Saturday’s Pitchers Wine Bar & Restaurant Open Stableford had to contend with persistent rain but the winner Hugh Doherty (12), wasn’t to let the conditions deter him as he produced an excellent score of 43 points for victory.

Another early starter Stuart Gauld (11) came home in second place with 42 points and Martin Kivelehan (4) with 39 points was third.

Paul McGuigan was the gross winner after he scored 36 points, Paul Maxwell (20)with 21 points won the back nine after a break of tie finish.

Nearest the pin was Ciaran McGuinness and the longest drive was hit by Shane McClean.

Last Wednesday’s club stableford competition as won by Maurice Temple (16) who scored 42 points, second was Robert Ewing (21) after he finished with 42 points and John Logue (13) with 40 points was third.

This week’s competitions at Foyle start tomorrow (Wednesday) with a summer trophy down for decision, Friday see an open take centre stage, before a two-day open stableford competition, sponsored by Golf Store Europe, takes place on Saturday and Sunday.
