Foyle Cycling Club's annual Youth Road Race at Campsie this weekend will be the club's first event of 2020.

On the back of an amazing 2019 when the club brought top flight cycle racing to the streets of Derry in line with the club’s stated aim to develop youth cycling within its community, it is most appropriate that this is the local club’s first event of the new decade.

In December, Foyle won the prestigious ‘Event of the Year’ accolade from Cycling Ireland for their hosting of the National Road Championships which started on Ship Quay Street last June and attracted both sizeable crowds and widespread television coverage.

This Sunday aspiring riders from all over Northern Ireland and beyond are expected to gather to sign on for the races which will be held at Campsie with strong entries in each of the classes. Boys and girls are expected to compete in races for Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 titles and take home some very unique trophies, this being the first race of the Ulster Cycling Academy’s Series.

Foyle C.C. will have entries in most of the races with locals Darragh O’Donnell and Fionn McLaughlin taking part in the Under 16 race for the first time. O’Donnell had a successful year in the 2019 Ulster Youth League, claiming an excellent second overall and will be keen to make his mark with the older racers early in the season.

Also racing for the club are Neala McShane, Amy Lundy and Oonagh Payne in the Under 16 Girls category and Niall Mooney, who has raced a few cyclo-cross events, represent Foyle in the Under 16 boys’ event in what will be his first road event.

The Foyle group have been training every Sunday together, gaining in fitness and skill, and this will be a good test of their braving the recent poor weather.

Children as young as 11 are eligible to race on what will be a well marshalled course. Spectators are welcome to come along and line the course.

The first race is at 10.30am with sign on from 9.00am at Eglinton Community Centre.
