Almost 600 triathletes from across Ireland and further afield will line up along the banks of the Foyle to take part in Sunday’s third annual firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon.
Organised by North West Triathlon Club, the hugely successful event has been recently awarded National Series status.
It will include the spectacle of a 750m open water swim in the River Foyle, a 20km closed road cycle and culminate in a 5km flat run around the city.
It is set to be the biggest triathlon event to be held in Derry and will also include a para-triathlon race for the first time.

North West Tri Club’s Maeve Maher-McWilliams, who won the female race for the past two years, isn’t expected to defend her title due to work committments.
However, there will be plenty of other up-and-coming talent hopeful of securing honours in their respective catergories with Aidan McCain, Mark Murray and Emmett Mullan all expected to fetaure prominently.
Paul McGilloway from the North West Triathlon Club, organisers of the firmus energy City of Derry triathlon claims it is an event ‘not to be missed!’
“We’re up in numbers this year to 520 to 530 participants and that’s because we’ve been granted National Series status by governing body, Triathlon Ireland and we’re delighted with that,” he said.
“This is what we have been working towards for the last two years, raising the bar each time to ensure we made the cut for year three!
“The firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon is now one of only 27 National Series races on the island of Ireland out of the hundreds of triathlons that take place each year. So this will be an event not to be missed!”
The race starts in the River Foyle outside Derry & Strabane District Council offices on the Strand Road at 8.20am with the winners expected to cross the finish line at the Council carpark between 9.20am - 9.30am.
The awards ceremony will be held in the City Hotel afterwards, at approximately 12noon.
