Roe Park was certainly buzzing last week as competitions such as The Spring League draws to a close and the club match play events begin.
Team captains for the Ulster GUI competitions were also busy preparing their respective teams for events such as Jimmy Bruen and Ulster Fourballs.
First up was a Club Stableford which was won by Mark Caughey who scored a fantastic 43 points. He narrowly beat in form man Jason Thompson, who also scored 43 points, on count back. Jason won’t be too disheartened mind as he has literally cleaned up so far this season and now plays off a handicap of 3. Malcolm Stuart had a solid round to finish third scoring 40 points and Andy Young was fourth with 39 points.
Saturday again saw a Club Stableford played in slighter tougher conditions than Thursday and Liam Berryman was the victor with a fine score of 40 points. He reminded son Kieran he isn’t the only talented golfer in the family.
Glenn Nicholl rode his luck some as he carded 39 points to claim second place and Norman McMichael took third with 38 points. Not to be outdone by his father, Kieran Berryman scored 34 points to win the best gross prize.
The Spring League sponsored by BGs Takeaway enters its final week with Jason Thompson, Andy Dunn and Derek Simpson sitting on top with 369 points. Marty McVeigh, Barry Toland and Gerard Mullan sit second with 361 points.
Third place is currently occupied by Kieran Berryman, Ryan Magee and Bryan Donaghy with 357 points. It’s all to play for in the final week which could yet spring a few surprises as the chasing pack hope for some monumental scores from their respective team mates.
The biggest buzz around the club this week is the reopening of the newly designed and upgraded final three holes. With brand new greens and additional upgraded bunkers amongst other things members will be queueing up to be the first to try them out.
With the hugely popular George McKeever and Geoffrey Conn match play competitions getting underway next week also sees Golfer of the Year begin. With champion Kieran Berryman and Jason Thompson playing some great golf it certainly makes for another exciting season.
