Open pairs competition coming to City of Derry

Details have just been announced of a two-day Open Pairs Competition at the City of Derry Golf Club on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday August 16-17.

The competition, with a prize fund of £1,000, is being sponsored by local Chartered Accountancy Practice, McDaid McCullough Moore of Clarendon Street.

The competition will be run on the basis of a 2-person team of any combination, male and/or female, junior golfers with a handicap of 12 or less are eligible to play. The format will be fourball betterball with both overall and daily prizes.

The cost per player for the two days will be £15 for City of Derry members and £25 for visitors. For his or her £25, each visitor will be able to play a free practice round on Friday August 15.

The closing date for entries will be on Wednesday August 13 and Entry Forms are available from either the Professional’s Shop at City of Derry Golf Club, the Club’s website at www.cityofderrygolfclub.com or by telephoning 028 71311496 for more details.

Over 40 pairs have already entered so the timesheet is filling up very rapidly.

Meanwhile Kevin Cassidy was the proud winner of Sunday’s Stableford at Prehen scoring a massive 44 points in the process with no less than 26 of those points coming on the back nine.

The 23 handicapper was delighted to record his first ever win at Prehen.

Paul McGrelis (16) raced to the turn with 23 points and added a further 19 on the homeward stretch to claim the second prize with 42 points overall, a winning score on most occasions.

Darren Heaney (9) consolidated his new single figure handicap even further with another impressive round to finish in third place on 40 points thanks to a favourable tie break. Stephen McKeegan (4) had 35 points to take the best gross prize.

The President’s scramble (John Hasson) takes place on Friday evening at 5.15pm and names should be given to the pro-shop as soon as possible.

The Maurice Allen Junior Open will take place at City of Derry Golf Club on Friday August 15.

Darren Heaney (10) continued his recent run of good form, scoring a fine 42 points to win the Weekly Thursday Open at Prehen.

A remarkable achievement that followed his success in the same competition a mere three weeks ago. And his added bonus is his new single figure handicap status.

Lester Moore (1) had another fabulous round, a best of the day gross 67 shots for 41 points and second overall.

Jim McDaid (15) was third on 40 points, the 23 of them that came on the back nine giving him the prize on a count back. Dermot Logue (4) playing out of Portsalon claimed the visitor’s prize with 37 points.
