Deery felt his defence and in particular his centre-back pairing of Stephen O’Donnell and Darryl McDermott coped with everything the Villagers put up to them.

“I thought we controlled the whole game. We probably didn’t create as much as we would have liked in the first half.

“At half-time I told the players to take more chances and get at them quicker and I felt we did that so I’m absolutely delighted.

“Our two centre halves stood up to the long ball to Warner Mullen and we cruised to a 2-0 victory.

“They looked to cause us bother from free kicks and corners and I told the players if we man up to that side of the game we’ll be alright.

“We kept a clean sheet and hopefully that’s a habit creeping in because I feel we can score in most games.

“We were in control of the game and you can’t ask any more of your players.

“We are involved in a lot of games where teams just sit in against you and it can frustrate but you keep probing.

“The first goal was vital for us because once we scored they had to change their style a bit and they came out, and we then were able to attack with more numbers and we looked really dangerous then.

“It’s hard to play against ten men when they are sitting out but when we scored they came out and we could have won by more than two.

“We had a tough away game at Warrenpoint Town; we took the lead but we couldn’t hold on and it was the same in Ballyclare; we were two up at Dixon Park and it was maybe our best 65 minutes of the season but we conceded two soft goals, which wasn’t disappointing, but overall there’s not a lot wrong.

“We have to learn, we have to stand up to the challenges and if we do that, we’ll be OK.”
