ATHLETICS: Celtic games and National Half Marathon this weekend

Swansea, Dublin and Lifford are among the weekend venues for local athletes with teenage star Fintan Stewart going for Ireland in the annual Celtic Games T&F challenge in the Welsh city on Saturday.

The talented Spartan was an impressive winner of the National U18 3000m title in Tullamore two weeks ago and will be expecting to show well over the same distance tomorrow against the best of the Welsh and Scots.

Elsewhere its road race action with the popular Riverine 10k in Lifford sure to attract good numbers on Sunday morning and further south its the National Half Marathon championships in Dublin with a sprinkling of local distance runners on the extensive entry lists.

Catherine Whoriskey will line up in the Half Marathon women’s race on Sunday, chasing a PB and perhaps a high placing and will be joined by clubmate F55 Una Gavin. Aaron Doherty is entered and back from Madrid, will try his luck in the competitive M35 age group category.

Among a lengthy Donegal entry is leading M50 Pauric McKinney of Inishowen AC. Just back from injury his performance will be interesting.

Staying with the Donegal clubs good luck to the Finn Valley men’s squad who are in Tullamore on Sunday for the National T&F finals. They will present a strong challenge for promotion after a good showing in the recent qualifying rounds in Dublin and Belfast.
