A stage adaptation of Back to the Future is set to open in London's West End next year after shows were halted due to coronavirus.

The adaptation of the cult movie - originally starring Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox - opened at the Manchester Opera House in March this year, but shows were soon stopped by the pandemic.

Now a promo video for the new show has been released. It stars Lloyd, who played Dr Emmett “Doc” Brown in the original 1985 film, along with two stars from the stage show, Roger Bart and Olly Dobson.

Back to the Future was immensely popular, grossing £279 million at the box office worldwide. Two more films were subsequently released, creating a trilogy still enjoyed by many today.

The stage show is based on the original films, which see Marty and Doc travel across time in Doc's DeLorean, and has been created by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, who engineered the original trilogy.

It will feature lyrics and music by six-time Grammy Award-winning Glen Ballard and Emmy and Grammy Award-winning Alan Silvestri, and will include classic songs from the original soundtrack like Johnny B Goode and The Power of Love.

Producer Colin Ingram, who was behind Ghost - The Musical, will produce the show, while John Rando - winner of a Tony Award - will direct.

Lloyd, 81, who also starred in The Addams Family and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, told theEvening Standard: “I’m delighted that Back To The Future the Musical will be up and running in London in mid-May. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the show’s run in Manchester, so I’m excited to finally see it for myself.

“I’ve already heard some of the new songs and met many of the cast members, particularly Roger Bart who plays Doc, so I’m confident the stage version will be exactly what our fans have been hoping for. And, Great Scott, I can’t wait to hear Doc Brown sing!”

Gale said: “Bob Zemeckis and I are over the moon to finally be opening Back to the Future The Musical in the West End at the historic Adelphi Theatre, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience our show. I promise, everyone will be delighted with how we’ve translated the movie to the stage.”
