Twelfth preview for Flagship event in UK City of Culture

It truly is an historic year for the District Lodges and City of Londonderry Grand Orange Lodge officers and members, who will be hosting the Twelfth in the city on Friday.

Not only has the Twelfth here been designated as one of the Flagship parades in the Province, but it takes place in the same year as the 400th anniversary of the historic links being forged between Londonderry and London.

Flagship status was granted in recognition that Londonderry has been named the UK City of Culture.

Morning Parade

The Morning Parade will take place at 10am, when the City Grand Colour Party, Grand Masters and City Grand Officers, followed by the City of Londonderry No 4 District LOL (two bands, William King Memorial Flute Band and Pride of the Orange and Blue Auld Boys Flute Band) and the City of Londonderry No 1 District LOL (with Churchill Flute Band) will form up at Society Street from 9.15am.

At 10am the parade moves off from Society Street along Society Street, Bishop Street, Diamond (Clockwise), Ferryquay Street, Carlisle Road, Craigavon Bridge, Spencer Road, Clooney Terrace, Glendermott Road, Bonds Street and May Street, stopping at the end of May Street nearest to the Limavady Road Junction. Upon arrival the parade will break-up, before reforming from 11.30am.

The main parade at 12pm is as follows: City Districts, City Grand Colour Party, Grand Masters and City Grand Officers, followed by the City of Londonderry No 4 District LOL (William King Memorial Flute Band and Pride of the Orange and Blue Auld Boys Flute Band) will form up in May Street and are expected to be in position for 11.30am, ready to move off at 12pm.

City of Londonderry No 5 District LOL (with Hamilton Flute Band, Killaloo Acc Band, Pride of the Orange and Blue Flute Band and Caw Flute Band) will form up in Pine Street, facing onto May Street and are expected to be in position for 11.30am, ready to move off at 12pm.

City of Londonderry No 1 District LOL (with Churchill Flute Band) will form up in Iona Terrace, facing onto May Street and are expected to be in position for 11.30am, ready to move off at 12pm.

Cumber Claudy No 2 District LOL (with Burntollet Sons of Ulster Flute Band, Kildaog Pipe Band, Tullintrain Pipe Band) will form up in Emerson Street, facing onto Bonds Street and are expected to be in position for 11.30am, ready to move off at 12pm.

Raphoe No 3 District LOL (with Convoy Pipe Band, Newtwoncunningham Acc Band, Manorcunningham Pipe Band and Raphoe Pipe Band) will form up in Roulston Avenue, facing onto Bonds Street and are expected to be in position for 11.30am, ready to move off at 12pm.

The order of District Lodges within the City of Londonderry Grand Orange Lodge Districts will be 4, 5, 1, 2 and 3. At 12pm Sharp the parade will leave from May Street, turning left onto the Limavady Road.

Coleraine District LOL (with nine bands) will arrive into the Waterside, via Limavady Road. After debusing the District will assemble at their designated area.

Coleraine District Bands are the Ulster Protestant Boys Flute Band, Ballysally Young Defenders Flute Band, Freeman Memorial Flute Band, Ballyrashane Flute Band, Pride of the Bann Flute Band, Portrush Sons of Ulster Flute Band, Loughanreagh Acc Band, Coleraine Fife and Drums Flute Band and Ballywillian Flute Band.

Macoqsuin District LOL (with six bands) will arrive into the Waterside, via Limavady Road. After debusing the District will assemble at their designated area. Macosquin District Bands are Ballinteer Flute Band, Royal Star Flute Band, Macosquin Flute Band, Pride of the Village Articlave, Articlave Flute Band and Ballinrees Pipe Band.

Limavady District LOL (with 14 Bands) will arrive into the Waterside, via Limavady Road. After debusing the District will assemble at their designated area.

Limavady District Bands are: East Bank Protestant Boys Flute Band, Trench Memorial Flute Band, Lough Foyle Williamite Flute Band, Boveva Flute Band, Edenmore True Blues Flute Band, Ballyquin Loyal Sons of Ulster Flute Band, Ballynarraig Pride of the Orange Flute Band, Aghanloo Flute Band, Shackelton Defenders Flute Band, Ardnariff Flute Band, Ballarena Acc Band, Largy Flute Band, Star of the Roe Flute Band and Dungiven Crown Defenders Flute Band.

All visiting Districts are expected to be in position for 11.30am, ready to move off from 12pm behind Raphoe No 3 District as it passes this point. The visiting Districts will be in the order of Coleraine, Macosquin and Limavady.

Pageantry

A few minutes before the main parade moves off, a number of actors in period costume (as well as possibly a number of horses), as well as a small band in period costume will move off from May Street, heralding the start of the parade.

Immediately in front of the City Grand Colour Party, a ‘Flagship Twelfth’ Banner will be carried by three or four young people. This will be followed by the usual Colour Party, followed by the new Banner, followed by the Grand Masters and City Grand Officers.

Platform Proceeding and Evening Parade

Platform proceedings in the field will commence at 3pm and are expected to conclude by 4pm.

At 4.15pm, the City Grand Colour Party, Grand Masters etc, together with the City of Londonderry No 4 District LOL (with two bands) will form up at the laneway beside the football pitch in Wilton Park, facing the gate of Wilton Park, ready to move off at 4.30pm Sharp.

The parade will make its way along the Limavady Road where the City of Londonderry Grand Orange Lodge and five District Lodges will open ranks in a fairwell to our visiting brethren, from Ebrington Presbyterian Church tailing along the Limavady Road.

The visiting Districts of Limavady, Macosquin and Coleraine, will parade Limavady Road, May Street, Bonds Street and turn left onto the Glendermott Road making their way to their buses for onwards travel.

Once the visiting Districts have passed, with the City Grand Lodge, and associated District having taken their positions (where they opened ranks) the parade will proceed.

The Flagship Banner, Grand Masters, City Grand Colour Party, the City of Londonderry No 4 District LOL (two bands), the City of Londonderry No 1 District LOL (one band) and LOL1060 (one band) will parade May Street, Bonds Street, Glendermott Road, Clooney Terrace, Spencer Road, Craigavon Bridge, Carlisle Road, Ferryquay Street, the Diamond (Austins corner), Bishop Street, Palace Street and Society Street.

There are four bands returning to Society Street in the evening parade; William King Memorial, Pride of the Orange and Blue Auld Boys Flute Band, Churchill Flute Band and Pride of the Orange and Blue Flute Band.

Raphoe No 3 District (four bands), who will be behind LOL1060 will follow the above route however at the far end of Spencer Road will turn left onto the Victoria Road for onwards travel.

The City of Londonderry No 5 District (four bands), who will be behind Raphoe No 3 District will parade May Street, Bonds Street, Glendermott Road, Clooney Terrace, Bank Place, left onto Glendermott Road and back into Bonds Street for Dispersal.

Cumber Claudy No 2 District LOL (three bands), who will be the last District in the parade at this point, will parade May Street, Bonds Street, Glendermott Road, Clooney Terrace, Bank Place, right on Glendermott Road to their transport at the Horse Show Link for onwards travel to Claudy.

There will be limited car parking at the field at Wilton Park, at a cost of £5 per Car. Cars must be parked by 12pm and will not be permitted to leave the field whilst any parade in entering or leaving the field.

Portable Toilets will be available at selected locations along the parade route.

There will be no parking on the roadway leading to Wilton Park.
