Speaking from Brussels, Ms. Anderson said: “Today I led a delegation made up of representatives of the campaign group Border Communities Against Brexit and Sinn Féin representatives to meet officials from the office of Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief negotiator on Brexit.

“We made it clear during our meeting that the British government’s Brexit agenda would be disastrous for Ireland, particularly for those living in border communities.

“I also explained how Brexit and the prospect of a hard border could undermine the Good Friday Agreement and the huge progress which has been made over the last two decades of the peace process.

“EU funding, particularly the PEACE programmes, has made a huge impact in terms of building and strengthening communities and promoting reconciliation. I do not believe for one second the British government would replace such funding.

“Today’s meeting is part of Sinn Féin’s engagement across Europe to build support for our campaign to secure designated special status for the north within the EU.”
