With the easing of restrictions and improving weather, the Borough is getting busier and there’s been a marked increase in litter levels.

While Council staff are doing all they can to keep the area clean, they cannot do this alone and that is where we need the help of all our residents and visitors.

So far this year the number of temporary bins in coastal hotspots has been increased, bins are emptied more often at the weekend and litter picking has been extended.

Yet despite this, our staff and volunteers in the community continue to face rising levels of discarded waste.

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Alderman Mark Fielding explained: “Council’s cleansing staff deserve a lot of credit for the work they do on a daily basis to keep the area clean, often going above and beyond in the course of their duties. As the area gets busier and litter levels increase, please show them your support by taking personal responsibility for your litter.

“We’re calling on people to be LitterSmart and you can help by never piling rubbish on top of, or beside, a bin which is clearly at capacity. This just makes the problem worse. If a bin is full, please either take your rubbish home with you or use another near-by.

“We have more bins in place now than ever before, and from June our mobile Wombles will be in place to enhance capacity over the summer months.

“We’re calling on everyone to work with us to address the problem posed by litter. If we all play our part then we can make a positive difference and keep the Borough looking its best.

“The public can be assured that Council staff are committed to this but they cannot be everywhere at once. The litter problem is shared by all of us and I hope the public understand the importance of this appeal.”

Other measures which will be utilised over the coming months as part of an ongoing anti-litter campaign include the use of VMS messaging reminding people to keep our borough clean by taking litter home and the roll out of further additional litter bins.
