An application to build a two-storey rear extension on a former commercial premises in the heart of Bond’s Street has been lodged with the local planning office.

The work - if approved - will take place on disused premises at 36 Bond’s Street at the corner of Emerson Street.

The gable-ended premises is host to one of several iconic murals in the area.

Entirely separate to the application, the Bond’s Street Community Association is currently in the process of replacing up to five of the murals in the area with art forms, which are to be decided by the local people.

The original memorial at the corner of Emerson Street depicted Cecil McKnight, a member of the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) and the Ulster Democratic Party (UDP) who was shot dead by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in 1991.
