Three people have been arrested - two in Londonderry and one in Coleraine - by detectives investigating the murder of Paul McCauley.

Two men, aged 28 and 36, were arrested in Londonderry and Coleraine this morning, Thursday, July 23, on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

A 27 year old woman was arrested last night in Londonderry on suspicion of withholding information. They have all been taken to Strand Road police station for questioning.

Paul (38) died last month in a care facility almost nine years after an attack in July 2006. He was attending a summer BBQ at the rear of a house in Chapel Road on 15 July 2006. At 3.20am on 16 July, only three people remained at the BBQ. A group of up to 15 people came from out of the bushes and attacked Paul and two of his friends. After the assault the group made off in the direction of Irish Street.

The officer leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey, said: “I want to thank those individuals who have come forward with information regarding the murder of Paul McCauley and attempted murder of his two friends.

“This is a very active investigation. I would like to make a further appeal for information from anyone who was at or near the scene of the brutal attack on Paul and his two friends which occurred at 105 Chapel Road in Londonderry. I am appealing in particular to those individuals who were in the Irish Street area of Londonderry on 16 July 2006 between 1am and 4.30am who may have crucial information regarding this investigation.

“Please come forward and tell us what you saw or heard or what you know. People can contact detectives at Maydown on the non-emergency 101 number or use the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if they prefer to provide information anonymously.”
