Heron Bros Ltd. has applied for permission to topple the chimney at the old Desmond and Sons factory at Springtown and bring the derelict building back into use.

The County Londonderry builder has applied for permission to develop storage and distribution units with trade counter facilities at the site in the Springtown Industrial Estate.

The old factory closed in January 2003, with the loss of 182 jobs.

According to documents submitted in support of the application: “Since then the building has remained closed and has fallen into disrepair, becoming a large unsightly landmark in Springtown.”

The applicants claim the removal of the chimney and other elements will result in a building with less of an industrial appearance and will be more in keeping with the surrounding built environment.

A variety of plans to bring the Springtown plant’s sister site in Drumahoe back into use have sofar provedunsucessful.
