MP: End tax dodging now

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has said the huge leak of confidential documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca should be a wake-up call for the Government to finally call time on the rich and powerful using tax havens to hide their wealth.

“One in five tax havens worldwide are under UK jurisdiction. However, while all of the British Overseas Territories have committed to joining the Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters, none have actually done so and no time-frame has been set in which they will do so,” he said.

“I am therefore calling on the government to take action both domestically and internationally to tackle the use of tax havens by multinational companies and wealthy individuals operating in the UK or in territories under its jurisdiction,” he added.
