DUP Alderman Gary Middleton has welcomed £5million in funding allocated to the Department of Regional Development (DRD) in the Assembly budget.

“I welcome the additional £5million which has been allocated to the Department of Regional Development for the repair of street lights and roads maintenance,” he said.

“I call on the DRD Minister to urgently implement these finances to ensure the current situation with faulty street lighting is brought to an end. For weeks, the elderly and vulnerable within our society have literally been left in the dark along with the thousands of others who were left in a similar position,” said the local DUP Alderman.

The Roads Minister Danny Kennedy recently wrote to Derry City Council to advise that his Department would, in the vast majority of cases, only repair faulty street lights in the city if they presented structural or electrical hazards to members of the public.
