Man critical after being shot twice in leg in Creggan

A Londonderry man is in a critical condition after being shot twice in the leg in a new housing development in Creggan.

Shortly before 9pm it was reported that the man, aged in his 20s, had been shot in the leg in Magowan Park, the recently developed housing estate on the old St Peter’s school site.

He was taken to hospital for treatment for two gunshot wounds to his right leg.

His condition is described as critical.

Outgoing Sinn Féin MLA and Foyle election candidate Maeve McLaughlin has condemned the shooting.

Ms McLaughlin said: “The perpetrators of this attack have nothing to offer but fear and intimidation.

“These attacks have been rejected by our communities and they have no place in the new Ireland we are trying to build.

“Our thoughts are obviously with the man who has been injured and his family and I would urge anyone with any information to bring it to the PSNI immediately.”

Inspector Alison Ferguson is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation to contact Detectives in Strand Road on 101. Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
