The former Health Minister Simon Hamilton expects the Western Trust to break even in 2016 despite us getting older, sicker, wanting new treatments and having higher expectations of the health service than in the past.

He said the final budget settlement for his Department in 2015/16 was “exceptionally challenging, ” but added: “All Trusts, including the Western Trust, are facing a range of pressures in 2015/16, such as inflationary cost pressures, demographic pressures from an increasingly aging population and the pressures associated with new treatments and patient expectations.

“The Western Trust continues to work closely with the Health and Social Care Board to financially manage these issues and I expect the Western Trust to achieve financial breakeven by March 2016.”
