'Brutal' broad-daylight attack leaves 'defenceless' man fighting for his life in Royal Victoria Hospital

A man in his thirties is in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital's intensive care unit after he was assaulted by a gang in broad-daylight on Sunday.

The incident occurred shortly before 5.00pm near the roundabout at the bottom of Carlisle Road in Londonderry city centre.

The PSNI received reports that a gang of other men punched and kicked the man in his thirties, leaving him with serious head injuries.

Detective Inspector Adrian Burns described the assault as "brutal" and confirmed police have made an arrest.

“The injured man was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast following the incident and he remains in the Intensive Care Unit today in a critical condition," explained DI Burns.

"A 27 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and he remains in custody at this time assisting with our enquiries."

DI Burns added: "This was a brutal attack on a defenceless man and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area on Sunday afternoon and witnessed the assault, or saw a group of males in the area of the steps between Carlisle Road and John Street, to contact detectives in Strand Road on 101 quoting reference number 1296 3/5/20.
