Armed robber used hammer for raid

Detectives at Strand Road in Londonderry have appealed for information about an attempted armed robbery at a local bookmaker’s office.

Detective Inspector Conor McStravick said that at about 5.45pm on Thursday, 23rd, a man went into the premises situated at Blucher Street.

“Initially, he tried to force open an amusement machine and then demanded money from staff,” said DI McStavrick.

“When told there was none, he tried to steal a television monitor from the wall.

“During this time the man had a hammer, however no one was hurt. He is described as being in his 30s and of a slim build.

“He was wearing a balaclava and a dark grey rain jacket with the hood up and navy bottoms.”

Anyone who saw the man in the area is asked to contact detectives at Strand Road. Information can be given on the police non-emergency number, 101, or by calling the Crimestoppers Charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
