Derry City and Strabane District Council has formally issued planning permission for an extension to Altnagelvin Area Hospital.

At their latest meeting the members of the Council’s Planning Committee decided to unanimously endorse the application for full planning permission, which involves the further redevelopment of Altnagelvin Area Hospital. It is understood the full application has now been issued by the Planning Officers to the applicants.

The proposal is for the construction of six wards, consisting of 144 single bedrooms, built over three storeys with associated support facilities.

The proposal will also allow for the relocation of inpatient beds from the existing tower block and also includes a new main entrance and improved vehicular and pedestrian access.

Chief Executive of Derry City and Strabane District Council, John Kelpie emphasised the importance of decisions such as this now being made at a local level.

“With the granting of this planning approval for Altnagelvin, Derry City and Strabane District Council in its role as the new local planning authority is playing its part in the delivery of this high quality health facility which will serve the needs of the people of the City and District in line with the key objectives of the developing Community Plan,” he said.
