Nearly two million pounds were spent on informers by the PSNI over the past five years although there’s been a recent dip in expenditure on what police term covert human intelligence sources (CHIS).

Between 2011/12 and 2015/16, £1,995,392 was spent on informers across the North.

The PSNI said the £2m “does not include any payments made to informants where funding may have been supplied by exempt bodies”.

The amount of money spent on informers has decreased over the past two years, however.

It was down to £297,158 in 2015/16.

Over £400,000 was spent on informers in 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14, whilst £375,730 was spent in 2014/15.
