Mayor commends work at Food Distribution Centres

A number of sites in the Borough have been re-purposed to co-ordinate emergency supplies for those at risk from food poverty at this time including families, older citizens and some of those who are shielding.

The initiative is led by the Department for Communities working collaboratively with Health Trusts, local councils, the voluntary and community sector and the private sector.

Speaking after the visit, the Mayor said: “I want to take this opportunity to commend the tremendous effort of community volunteers and Council staff who are working tirelessly to ensure these vital supplies reach those who need them most. I have been involved in the community response set up by our local GAA club in Kilrea, where I have seen the good work that is going on at first hand. I know this is being replicated by many groups across the Borough and as a Council we are indebted to our community and voluntary sector at this time.

“I want to encourage everyone to continue complying with the coronavirus restrictions which are currently in place. It is vitally important that we do what is asked of us around social distancing, essential travel and regular hand washing. If we all play our part we will get through this together. Remember, stay home and stay safe.”

The distribution of the food packages is part of a wider response scheme to the current health crisis, which aims to ensure that those in need get the assistance they require to stay safe and well.
