Audiences ready for Playhouse mystery tour

Three secret locations set the scene for three individual monologues - a bus will be waiting on Artillery Street as audiences arrive at The Playhouse from Wednesday 11 to Saturday 14 December at 12noon.

Those lucky enough to be part of the limited audience on those buses will be taken to top secret settings for three special stories.

For four matinee performances of The Playhouse’s production of the rarely performed ‘Three Monologues’ by Jennifer Johnston, audiences will be transported (literally and spiritually) into the 1980s.

The unusual performances of three monologues, written by award-winning Irish author Jennifer Johnston in response to The Troubles in Northern Ireland, are part of the final and most ambitious Playhouse event of UK City of Culture 2013.

In ‘Mustn’t Forget High Noon’ the best friend of a young Protestant man, Billy, has just been shot by the IRA. In ‘Christine’ the wife of Billy mourns his violent death at the hands of the IRA. ‘Twinkletoes’ follows the story of the wife of a top IRA prisoner who is looked up to by her community

Dublin actors Helen Behan, Gina Moxley will join local actor Pat Lynch in an unusual staging of the show, directed by Caitríona McLaughlin.

“For this production we wanted to deliver audiences to a space that would transform their experience of the piece” producer Kieran Griffiths said.

“These three individual monologues tell stories of ordinary lives in an extraordinary setting; survival in the midst of the turmoil of a person’s surroundings.”

‘Three Monologues’ will run The Playhouse from Tuesday 10 to Saturday 14 December at 8pm in The Playhouse Theatre, with four matinee performances on location, starting from The Playhouse, on Wednesday 11 to Saturday 14 December at 12noon. Lunch will be provided. Tickets are £14/ £10 (Preview Tuesday 10th December at 8pm all tickets £10) and are available from The Playhouse Box Office on (028)7126828 or www.derryplayhouse.co.uk. An ISL and BSL signed, captioned and audio described performance will take place on Thursday December 12, 8pm.
