ON Saturday Foyle & Londonderry College travelled to Carrick Grammar and booked their place in the semi-finals of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools Bowl.

For coach David Barnett he was thrilled the boys kept their season well and truly alive.

“We competed well up front against a big Carrick pack turning a lot of ball over. In the second half we defended much better which meant Carrick were unable to cross our line,” he said.

Neil Burns had a man of match performance at 10 and other guys who performed well were Patrick Lesson and Niall Adair.”

The visitors entered the quarter-final tie with a degree of confidence following their victory over Carrick earlier in the season.

In very wet conditions Foyle started the game positively running the ball with every opportunity. This translated into an early lead with winger David Lapsley opening the scoring with a try, which was converted by Neil Burns. Then the Foyle boys seemed to switch off and conceded two very soft tries. Carrick missed both conversions.

Foyle then regrouped and through some good play by the Foyle pack, they earned a penalty which was taken by Neil Burns to make the score 10-10. Just before the half-time whistle Carrick were given a penalty in front of the Foyle post to give them a 13-10 lead at the break.

Foyle started the second as they started the first, dominating possession and territory. 15 minutes into the second half Neil Burns scored a superb individual try to give Foyle the lead. He ran the ball from his own 22 to score under the Carrick posts to make it 15-13 to the visitors. Foyle then extended their lead with another try by Burns which he converted to make it 22-13. With 10 minutes left Foyle extended their lead again with Neil Burns scoring a penalty to make the final score 25-13.

Foyle now travel to either Grosvenor Grammar or Omagh Academy in the semi-final.
