This year’s marathon takes place in Derry~Londonderry on Sunday June 5th and is now firmly established as one of the major events in the city’s calendar.

Registration originally closed earlier this month, but organisers have been inundated with requests for further places and now, working with sponsors SSE Airtricity, it has been agreed that entries will reopen for an extra 250 runners.

SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon Race Director, Noel McMonagle said: “Our marathon is now in its fourth year and since 2013 the event has grown bigger and bigger.

“The support from the public is terrific and really gives the runners a push.

“We are delighted that an additional 250 participants can now enter, but they will need to be quick, as we’re expecting the extra slots to fill up very fast!”

Vicky Boden, SSE Airtricity, commented: “The SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon is a fantastic community event in Derry~Londonderry and we are delighted to be involved with the race as it continues to grow.

“We know that runners undertake huge personal sacrifice in getting ready to take part, and so we are urging people to support the event and cheer on the participants on the day.

“In recent years more than £250,000 has been raised for local charities and we expect something similar this time around, so adding the extra 250 places is good news for everyone.”

Athletes from across the globe will compete over the 26.2 mile course, taking in stunning views of the city’s waterfront roads and paths along the way.

As in previous years, there will be plenty of entertainment for all ages, including the one-mile SSE Airtricity Kids Mini Marathon for local children aged 9-17.
