Nigel Mearns was one of two players who had a hole in one at Roe Park last week.

An exciting week at Roe Park saw Arnold Simpson and Nigel Mearns both make history at the club as they managed a magical Hole-In-One each during last Thursday’s competition.

Arnie was first in as he saw a well struck eight iron at the twelfth hole rewarded with the sight of the ball disappearing into the hole after one bounce.

Playing with the seniors as he usually does, it was his first ever Hole-In-One and was over the moon as he celebrated in The Coach House afterwards.

Incredibly with the celebrations still going on there, Nigel Mearns played a fantastic shot at the very tough par 3 third hole.

He hit a six iron with a small draw, watching with a huge smile as the ball bounced and rolled into the hole for his second ever Hole-In-One.

Both players can now look forward to sporting a fantastic Hugo Boss watch courtesy of having now joined the elusive Hole-In-One Club.

In other news the Spring League entered its second week with Club Stableford competitions on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Derek Simpson having recently upgraded his clubs with Resident PGA Professional Michael McCrudden certainly put them to good use as he won with a superb 40 points.

He narrowly beat Paul Cobb in second on count back with the same score.

Liam Berryman was third with 38 points and Eamon Brown was fourth with 37 points.

The Club Stableford on Saturday saw some fantastic prizes up for grabs courtesy of sponsors, M&M Electrics.

Gary Moore set the benchmark early with 42 points which remained the highest of the day, giving him his first victory of the year.

In form men Alex Steele and Eamon Brown duked it out for second spot with both scoring 40 points.

Alex scored a simply unbeatable 24 points on the back nine to take it leaving Eamon in third place.

Last week also saw Roe Park host Balmoral Golf Club in the first round first leg of the Ulster Cup.

The team did well despite the bitterly cold conditions with Arnold Simpson, Sammy Murphy, Stephen Boyd, John McKay and Martin Rafferty winning to give Roe Park a 5&2 lead to take into the return leg at Balmoral.

The second week of the Spring League sees Alex Steele, John McKay, Mervyn Brown and Stephen Rainey now lead with 158 points.

This week sees the Spring League continue with club competitions on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday will see the first Monthly Medal competition of the season with superb prizes once more provided by sponsors SJ Mitchell & Company.
