GOLF: President's Day joy for Irwin at Faughan Valley

On Saturday John Huw Cleghorn hosted his very successful Presidents Day at Faughan Valley.

The competitors found the going tough at times with rainy and windy conditions, but the President would like to thank all that attended on the day and a special thanks once again to David Forbes and the Green-Keeping staff who had the course looking immaculate under such weather conditions over the past few weeks.

The winner of Presidents’ Day was Gerry Irwin (15) with 40 points, second and third spot was decided on a BOT between Paul Dufy (7) and Lee O’Connor (6) both carding 39 points with Paul taking second spot with a superior back nine.

The winner of the gross prize was four-handicapper Bernard Kelly with 73 gross, the front nine was won by Alister Campbell with 22 points and the back nine was won by Brendan Carton also scoring 22 points.

The winner of the Longest Drive was to Frank McClintock and Nearest the Pin went to Joshua McGowan.

The winner of the Ladies prize was our Lady Captain Jackie McNulty with 35 points playing off a handicap of 28 and second spot went to Catherine O’Neill (26) with 32 points. the presentation of prizes will be at The White Horse on Saturday August 6th.

On Sunday the club hosted its annual Happy Landing Open with first spot going to 15 handicapper Terry Dornan with 37 points second spot was won by 20 handicapper Eoghan Brolly on a BOT finish with 13 handicapper Richard Godfrey who took third spot both scoring 35 points.

Also on Sunday Paul Duffy and his Jimmy Bruen team had a great result at Newtonstewart defating Ballybofey by 3 matches to 2, and are looking forward to the semi-finals aginst Fort William venue to be announced.

In the midweek competition the winner was Cecil King with 38 points playing off a handicap of 14 and taking second spot was 17 handicapper Gary Nicholl with 36 points

This weekend coming Faughan Valley will be hosting a Strokeplay competition, with our popular mid-week open running from Tuesday to Thursday.

Meanwhile Open Week got underway at Foyle on Saturday with a large turnout for the J.K.C. Specialist Cars Stableford with Tony McMonagle getting in an early strike for the higher handicappers with a fine 41 points winning score.

One handicapper Paul McGuigan negotiated the Ballyarnett course from the back tees in three under gross for a magnificent 40 points return and second place, with Martin McEleney finishing third with 39 points. Buncrana’s Stephen McHugh (4) with 33 points claimed the visitor prize; the back nine went to Peter Kemish (15) after he scored 19 points and Agnes McLaughlin (17) with 37 points won the ladies section.
