McCourt could link up with
old boss

Bury are believed to have expressed an interest in former Derry City midfielder, Paddy McCourt, although manager David Flitcroft acknowledges the Northern Ireland international could actually be lured back into League of Ireland football.

The 30-year-old former Celtic player is current a free agent following his departure from Barnsley this summer and Flitcroft confirmed that The Shakers were one of a number of clubs keen on the man nicknamed ‘The Derry Pele’.

In fact it was Flitcroft who persuaded McCourt to try his luck at Oakwell in August, 2013, when he managed Barnsley and a possible reunion could be on the cards at the JD Stadium.

However, the Bury boss said he was also aware that McCourt retains strong family ties across the Irish Sea which, he maintained, could prove to be the biggest factor in any future decision.

“I’ve been made aware that Paddy’s has received some good offers from back home and abroad,” said Flitcroft, who was speaking to the media following last Saturday’s 3-3 result against Rochdale.

“It’s still a possibility but I know Paddy probably better than anyone in terms of football and his heart might well rule his head on this one, or his head might rule his heart.

“One thing I do know is that he will always go home; he’s got a good family circle in Derry and I think he will always want to end his career at home on a high.

“It’s a tough decision either way. We’re still in negotiations with Paddy and we’ll see how that goes.”
