Institute: Glens see off battling Drumahoe men

Once again defensive mistakes combined with not taking chances resulted in Institute losing 2-1, at Glentoran, today.

The two goals the Waterside men conceded were very soft, while at the other end they missed a few clear cut opportunities when the game was evenly poised.

On just two minutes Paul McVeigh did well to rob Calum Birney before his left wing cross found an unmarked Matty Young, but his close range volley was superbly saved by Glens goalkeeper Elliott Morris.

Institute had another chance on six minutes when Robbie Hume’s drilled corner found Ben Doherty, but his first time strike from 10 yards, which Morris’ beaten, rattled the bar.

The Glens had an opportunity on 14 minutes after Stephen O’Donnell lost possession to Jordan Stewart on the half-way line, he in turn feed Curtis Allen, but the striker blasted wide from just inside the box.

A defensive mistake by the visitors resulted in the Glens taking the lead on 24 minutes.

McKeever’s miss hit clearance had to be headed away for a corner by Stephen O’Donnell and Niall Henderson’s resulting corner found Jay Magee and he headed home from close range.

The Belfast men should have doubled their lead on 44 minutes after David Scullion some how side footed over from four yards, after Allen’s inch perfect left wing centre had picked him out.

Institute missed another golden chance right at the start of the second half when a super run by Doherty, which saw him skip past three Glens players, before his cross was only half cleared straight into Robbie Hume’s path, but he blasted over from close 12 yards.

Moments later a super pass by Fra McCaffrey released Jordan Stewart, but with only Gallagher to beat, the young striker blasted wide.

On 75 minutes the visitors had two glorious chances to level things firstly Mark Forker fired wide from 12 yards, but it was the second chance a minute later, which really should have been taken.

Hume latched onto substitute Johnny Addis’ back pass, but with only Morris to beat, the striker’s shot was tipped wide by the Glens keeper’s left boot.

Six minutes from time the home side netted a second after Allen got a bit of luck when he got away from Scoltock inside the box, he rolled the ball across the six yard box for substitute Steven Gordon to easily side foot home, despite Dean Curry’s best attempts on the line.

Right at the death Hume did manage to pull one back for Paul Kee’s side when his left footed strike from the right side of the box found the bottom corner.
