Stute ease todeserved win

The Drumahoe side’s free flowing football and goal scoring exploits against the bottom side was a joy to watch.

“Especially in the first half we were much more like the way I watch them in training, the way we play and the last two weeks are starting to find our feet a wee bit, especially in training,” he said.

“Training has went up a notch and the players who have been out injured are starting to show a bit of fight trying to get into the team and that’s healthy and it showed in our performance against Annagh.

“We could have won by any score to be honest.”

In the first half the Waterside men missed a host of clear cut opportunities and although they never scored the hatful which their play deserved, Deery did concede his players just slightly took their foot off the pedal.

“I think it’s hard and I remember this as a player, but when you are so comfortable in the first half it’s hard to replicate it then in the second half, it’s just one of those things,” he added.

“The power of the mind is what I think it is, they are going out with the same desire but subconsciously you know that you have the three points in the bag and it happens like that sometimes.

“But overall we scored three in the first half and it could have been five or six and then in the second half we scored two and probably could have scored three or four, but the way we created chances today was the real positive and the desire to try and score goals was good to see.

“Because people speak about that Larne result that was like losing four points, because it ruins your goal difference and we obviously want to score goals, but three points was the main thing.”

One man who was entitled to be annoyed after a 5-0 win, would have been Stute’s Michael McCrudden.

The midfielder did score, but he missed a first half penalty and hit the woodwork three times, but Deery is pleased with the Gobnascale man’s form.

“I can only complement Mickey, because he has gone away and really got himself in great condition,” he added.

“You underestimate that side of the game, we all know that Michael McCrudden is a talented footballer, everyone knows it, but he has gone away and you could see his whole body shape has changed.

“He’s strong and he’s holding the ball up for us and he’s driving us forward and it’s only positive but he wasn’t on his own today.

“Especially attacking players we created some amount of chances and the defenders just stopped every counter attack and got us playing on the front foot again, which was pleasing.”
