“I keep telling boys to train well because that’s where I also judge them and he has been training really well and he got in ahead of Robbie (Hume), even though Robbie scored in our last game, but Jamie has been very good for us all season.

“He took his two goals really well and I took him off because he was booked, he was also struggling with a shin injury and he was a wee bit disappointed about being taken off because he was on a hat-trick, for any young man at that age scoring a hat-trick in a senior team is brilliant but I have to look at the bigger picture.

“He wasn’t happy when he came off and that’s what I want, I want my players to be annoyed if they are substituted, because it shows me they care.”

Midfielder Niall Grace was given his debut for the Waterside men and the ex-Trojans man did well to play the full 90 minutes.

Having signed a number of weeks ago but he had to wait for the transfer window to open, then he carried over a suspension, he was cup tied and then a host of games were postponed, so Deery was a happy man that he finally got some game time.

“Niall deserves a lot of credit,” he added.

“He played 45 minutes against Bonagee in a friendly for us and up to that he hadn’t really played a game for a few months, so he showed tremendous character and fitness to play the full 90 minutes.

“He was unlucky not to have scored but his overall play was very good.

“That was one of the reasons why I wanted to bring him in, I tried to bring him in at the start of the season but he went travelling for a while.

“He’s a great addition for us, as he gives us that little bit of steel and determination in midfield.”
