INSTITUTE: Boss annoyed following heavy defeat against Larne

Deery, who conceded it was his worse ever result in his footballing career, admits defensively his team were terrible.

“It definitely was a bad day at the office, but it’s more embarrassment than anger,” he said.

“It’s a hard one to take and genuinely in my head I can’t recall myself getting beat 6-0, either as a player or a manager.

“But I’ll stand by my players but I’m going to go and review that performance further and see what the best thing is going forward because that wasn’t good enough.

“You know yourself that it’s hard to report on these games when you are them, it’s just one of those days, where we were all over the place defending massively, especially defensively.

“We looked very leggy and always looked like we were going to make mistakes, which resulted in us being 2-0 down at half-time. We had chances in the first half, but we were 2-0 down at half-time, through two mistakes and then you can’t legislate for the second half performance, you just have to go away and evaluate it and see what you are going to do about it.”

Deery, who will always stand up for his players, felt for a period in the second half the wheels just came off.

In fact at times the home side were doing some showboating and in truth the Waterside men could easily have lost by a bigger margin.

Striker Paul Maguire was inches away from completing his hat-trick as he headed against the bar,

“It’s really hard when you are sitting on the bench trying to make decisions when you go down to 10 men, as you are stretched as it is in terms of numbers, but I knew once Mark (Scoltock) was sent-off we were going to be a wee bit at sixes and sevens,” he added.

“But at times like that you need to show a wee bit of character and desire to stop goals and usually that’s our strong point, but on Saturday deserted us. A manager can only do so much, sometimes players need to stand up and be counted, whenever it’s really tough.

“I didn’t think it was a 6-0 game, but that’s the score-line and it will be a test of character to see what we are made off.”
