Derby delight for Stute

The Drumahoe club, who for long spells in the first half were second best and had goalkeeper Michael Doherty to thank on a few occasions, netted twice through Stephen Curry and Darren McCauley just after the hour mark to seal the points, in front of a good crowd at the Riverside Stadium.

It was Oran Kearney’s side who went close after just three minutes when Ian Parkhill raced at the Stute defence but after getting into a good position his poor effort was easily saved by Doherty.

Institute had a half chance on 10 minutes after some neat passing ended with McCauley side stepping Bannsiders net-minder Eugene Ferry, but the midfielder could only direct his shot from an acute into the side netting.

Doherty made a wonder save just before the mid-way point of the half as he instinctively kept out Shane McGinty’s powerful strike.

After some what of a dressing down at half-time Paul Kee’s side started to come more and more into the game after the break and they broke the deadlock on 62 minutes when Curry’s spectacular drive from 30 yards gave Ferry no chance.

The ex-Derry City goalkeeper will feel he should have probably done better for Stute’s second goal on 73 minutes.

A clever one-two with McCauley and Curry ended with the Gobnascale man’s low left footed strike somehow getting past Ferry.

Moments later the Waterside men should have added a third when a super move involving Curry, Aaron Walsh and McCauley ended with Stephen O’Flynn’s side footed effort from close range, which had Ferry beaten, clipping the outside of the post.
