CRICKET: Newbuildings on the National Cup trail

It's a big weekend for the North West's youngest senior cricket club coming up as Newbuildings head to Laois on Saturday for the semi-final of this year's National Cup.

The home side accounted for Ballyspallen on DLS in the last round and Newbuildings skipper Dale Culbert said that his side had done a little homework ahead of the big match.

“We’ve had a look at some of their players and we’ve chatted to the ’Spallen lads as well so we’ve a fair idea what to expect,” he said.

“It won’t be the same as the game in Kerry because they were able to bring in a couple of Leinster players as they play in the Munster league- whatever that’s about!

“We have everybody available anyway and as always we’re taking a bus down, however any party is on hold until after the match.

“We feel we have a big chance to reach the final from here so we’re 100 per cent focused on the game and nothing else.

“It would be some achievement after only being a senior club for a few years and with plenty of good work going on at our new home ground now these are very exciting times for us.

“This year’s final is set to be played at Clontarf and we’ll do everything in our power to be in it.”
