CRICKET: Fixture congestion looming

There were only two league matches played on Saturday; Killyclooney keeping their unbeaten run alive with a nail-biting win at home to St Johnston while Glendermott posted their second win of the season away at struggling Bonds Glen.

’Clooney were indebted to an unbeaten 69 from Alan Colhoun that saw them hang on for a 1-wicket verdict over the Saints, with a half century from skipper Darren Moan, 37 from Mark Gordon and 31 from Andre Henry helping them chase down the visitors’ 231-8.

Rammohan Goud claimed a 5-wicket haul for the Saints but it was to help his side only to the extra bonus points as the home side got over the line.

Earlier, half centuries from Alan Macbeth and his nephew Jack as well as 36 from Ian and 32 from Goud had helped the Donegal men to their competitive total with Henry, Richard McMorris and Andy Lynch picking up two wickets apiece for Killyclooney.

Bonds Glen continue to struggle and despite an unbeaten 63 from Graham Boyd they fell well short of Glendermott’s competitive total of 258. Five wickets for Charlie Elder and a couple from overseas man Sheldon Pillay saw the Bee Gees all out for 153 to leave them stuck to the bottom of the table.

Pillay top scored with 86 (12 fours, 3 sixes) for the Rectory side with Gordon Montgomery adding 78 (9 fours, 3 sixes) while Jason Curry claimed three wickets and Richard Hepburn and Leslie Curry two apiece for the Bee Gees.

The game between Newbuildings and Strabane had already been re-scheduled for next Sunday owing to the wedding of Newbuildings player Dale Culbert while Ballyspallen had agreed to a postponement of their match with Burndennett to accommodate the Tyrone side who had a trek to South Cork for Sunday’s National Cup tie with Midleton.

The Newbuildings versus Strabane game will now have to be put back further given the home side’s National Cup replay in Meath on Sunday while the ‘Spallen v Burndennett match has been re-scheduled for 25 June.
